This course is offered to Licensed Vocational Nurses (and/or interested Registered Nurses) and is designed to prepare them in starting and superimposing intravenous fluids, and performing blood withdrawal as ordered by the primary care provider. The course covers psychological preparation of the patient, selection of equipment, aseptic technique, relevant anatomy and physiology, pharmacology of intravenous solutions and total parenteral nutrition, and administering blood components. Students will perform simulated and actual intravenous catheterizations and blood withdrawals. The theory part of the course is offered as home study and clinical takes place in the classroom setting with both live and simulated models.

This course provides an introduction to medical language for students entering the Vocational Nursing Program or would like to enhance their medical vocabulary beyond a CNA level.
