This course is offered to Licensed Vocational Nurses (and/or interested Registered Nurses) and is designed to prepare them in starting and superimposing intravenous fluids, and performing blood withdrawal as ordered by the primary care provider. The course covers psychological preparation of the patient, selection of equipment, aseptic technique, relevant anatomy and physiology, pharmacology of intravenous solutions and total parenteral nutrition, and administering blood components. Students will perform simulated and actual intravenous catheterizations and blood withdrawals. The theory part of the course is offered as home study and clinical takes place in the classroom setting with both live and simulated models.

Requirements

• Participants must complete a 27-hr home study course prior to the classroom hands-on session.

This course provides an introduction to medical language for students entering the Vocational Nursing Program or would like to enhance their medical vocabulary beyond a CNA level. It shows how to decipher the meanings of medical terms by breaking them down into smaller word parts. The course introduces words in the context of human anatomy, physiology and pathology so concepts are easier to grasp, while instilling the basics of suffixes, prefixes, and root words essential to developing a working medical vocabulary. Pharmacology Online offers tools to promote "learning by doing." The course is offered in two parts. Students earn 24 contact hours for each the first half of the course and another 24 contact hours for the other half.

Part 1

Covers Pharmacology Basics, Drugs Affecting the Central Nervous System, Drugs Affecting the Autonomic Nervous System, Drugs Affecting the Cardiovascular and Renal Systems, and Drugs Affecting the Endocrine System.

Part 2
